I saw five minutes of it---had to cash up the bar, where the TV is, just as the Spice Girls came out---and thought it was lacklustre but okay if you like that sort of thing. Was pleased to see Eric Idle. Was less pleased when they didn't use him properly, but then that's been the case with the Pythons for the last forty years. This article displays that someone's put a lot more thought into the closing ceremony's insidiousness than I have, and I can't fault him for that.

Surprised by how thought-provoking Danny Boyle's opening ceremony has proved to be. Surprised by how much the Olympics have affected me as an unwilling inhabitant of an arbitrary socio-geopolitical construct. Surprised by how appropriate "bonkers but brilliant" feels as a self-stereotype, especially if you combine it with "ambitious but rubbish".
