Four minutes to midnight

On 26th September 1983, Lieutenant Colonel Stanislav Petrov received early warning of a US first-strike nuclear attack on the USSR. Contrary to his orders, and basing his decision solely on intuition—unsure whether or not millions of his countrymen were about to perish in a nuclear inferno—he decided that the warning was caused by a computer malfunction, and did not cause the launch of a retaliatory strike against NATO.
